Transmaterial: Plasticine, Silicone, Seaweed, Rice Paper, Filo Pastry





P L A S T I C I N E                   


 

- Founded in 1897 by William Barbutt - an Art Teacher in England
- Made of calcium salts, aliphatic acids and petroleum jelly
- Putty like substance
- Similar to 'Play Doh'
- Acts like a non drying clay
- Non-toxic, soft, malleable
- Commonly used in clay animation/stop animation



 S I L I C O N E

- A very versatile substance; used as a sealant, lubricant, medical purposes, adhesive, insulation, cookware
- Waterproof and Fire resistant
- Rubber like material
- Low toxicity and thermal conductivity
- Good electric insulation
- Can even be used as a dry cleaning solvent
- Normal used in plastic survery, gap sealant in houses, bakeware, contact lenses, etc




S E A W E E D (Wrapper)


- Known in Japanese as 'Nori'
- Made from seaweed in a similar process in that of paper making
- Commonly used to wrap sushi or onigiri
- Also used for garnishing noodles and soup
- Very light and bendable
- Tears quite easily
- Nori is made in a variety of seaweed types
- High in protein

R I C E   P A P E R

- Made from starch in Vietnam
- Smooth, strong, thin and crackly
- Used for wraps in food dishes ie summer rolls or fried spring rolls
- Also can be made into paper
- Can bend quite well without breaking
- Glutinous


F I L O   P A S T R Y

- Thin, translucent sheets of pastry
- Commonly used in Greek, European and Middle Eastern cuisines
- Very delicate, crumbles and breaks easily
- Multiple sheets are put together to strengthen the delicate sheets
- Filo pastry dries out very quickly
- Normally kept in cool temperatures to keep the moisture from evaporating
- Butter is brushed on the pastry to help them brown
- very very light
